There are so many people on this Island who have a story to tell.
All, without exception ,when approached, are reluctant to contribute
to this segment .
They share Elsie Williams sentiments when they say " I am not a
special person "
Maybe so, maybe not. But all have lived on the Island for a long time
and over the years have contributed in many ways to make this Island
of ours such a special place.
David Hamilton is also one of those. His Grandparents came to live in
a rented house on the Island soon after the second world war. David's
parents and their three children came to the Island to help his
grandparents build their own house (Now occupied by Stewart & Allison
Delahey and their family).
he whole family then moved back to Melbourne for employment reasons,
but returned regularly for holidays. During those holidays David's
father build a holiday house in stages over many years (on the corner
of 1st Parade and Sixth Avenue).
David always loved the island, and after he married Judy in 1975, they
both decided to move down and try the lifestyle. David’s first job in
Bairnsdale was as a “trolley boy” for Halfcase Warehouse, moving up to
assistant manager beside another Raymond Island identity, Ken Edney.
He worked briefly at Patties Bakery and then moved on to his current
position with the Bairnsdale Advertiser. They have two daughters, both
born on the island who are now grown up, married, and living in
Bairnsdale. David’s parents moved off the island to Paynesville around
twelve years ago, and then eight years ago moved to Tweed Heads in
N.S.W.
David
has supplied us with many photographs of the past. ( Many of whom we
have not seen before ) David has gone out of his way to describe in
detail their significance. He offers a word of caution , explaining
that " all this is a long time ago ,I
was a young boy then and some of the details may be wrong. If any
other residents can correct some errors I have made I would appreciate
that." " Errors made "
